Our review

In 2017, Alex Preukschat coordinated what was at the time the most ambitious collective analysis of blockchain in Spanish: more than fifty experts from Spain and Latin America examine the technology's impact across sectors ranging from finance and logistics to healthcare, energy, and governance. The thesis that structures the book is that blockchain represents a distributed trust protocol layer with the potential to reconfigure how economic systems record, verify, and transfer value — the digital equivalent of 15th-century double-entry bookkeeping. The work is valuable for its thematic breadth and the diversity of perspectives it gathers, from technical analysis to legal and philosophical reflection. The structural critique is inevitable: the collective format generates uneven quality between chapters, and the enthusiasm of 2017 — at the peak of the ICO boom — colours some analyses with an optimism that subsequent ecosystem developments have qualified or refuted. As a panoramic view of the blockchain debate in the Spanish-speaking world at a specific historical moment, however, the book retains its value as a reference document.

Key takeaways

• Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology, not a universal solution: its utility depends on whether the problem actually requires decentralised trust.
• The strongest blockchain use cases involve multiple parties that do not trust each other and need a shared, immutable record.
• The 2017 crypto ecosystem's enthusiasm generated many projects that promised blockchain where a conventional database would have sufficed.
• Institutional adoption of distributed ledger technology has advanced more gradually and selectively than 2017 predictions anticipated.
