Our review

Published in 2002, «Come Into My Trading Room» is Alexander Elder's second major work and functions as a direct continuation of «Trading for a Living» (1993). Where the first book established the foundations of Elder's system — psychology, method, and money management — this second work expands and refines it with additional tools. The central contribution is the Triple Screen system, which requires analysing the market across three distinct time frames before executing any trade: the macro frame (trend), the intermediate frame (correction or impulse), and the micro frame (precise entry). Elder also deepens the treatment of the trading journal as a continuous improvement tool, capital management, and objective self-evaluation. The book extends coverage to options and futures, broadening the scope beyond the original. The style is direct and pedagogical, with concrete chart-based examples. Reading Elder's foundational work first is beneficial, though the book can be read independently with some additional effort.

Key takeaways

• The Triple Screen system demands confluence across three time frames: the primary trend, the countertrend, and the precise entry signal.
• The trading journal is not a log of trades but a diagnostic tool: it reveals which specific behaviours generate losses.
• Performance should be evaluated across series of trades, not trade by trade; judging each trade individually distorts the learning process.
• Trading options and futures requires understanding the implicit leverage; the same sizing error that is manageable in stocks can be catastrophic here.
