Our review

«Security Analysis» is the most influential text in the history of value investing and the only book on this list that can be called foundational without hyperbole. Published in 1934, at the epicenter of the Great Depression, Graham and Dodd established the principles of modern fundamental analysis: how to read a balance sheet with rigor, how to calculate the intrinsic value of a business, and how to apply the concept of «margin of safety» — buying at a price sufficiently below value to protect against error and chance. The work is dense, extensive, and technically demanding — it is not designed for a first reading without prior accounting training. Across more than 700 pages, Graham and Dodd treat stocks, bonds, convertibles, and preferred stocks with the level of detail a professional analyst would expect. The most recommended edition for modern readers is the sixth, with updated commentaries. For those who approach it with adequate preparation, «Security Analysis» has no equivalent: it is the source, not a book about the source.

Key takeaways

• The margin of safety — buying at a price substantially below intrinsic value — is the most important principle in value analysis.
• Mr. Market is a manic-depressive partner whose daily quotes should be ignored except when they offer advantageous buying or selling opportunities.
• Fundamental analysis demands separating intrinsic value from market price, which diverge frequently in the short term.
• Conservative risk management — avoiding permanent capital loss — takes precedence over the pursuit of returns.
