Marc Vidal condenses the most important economic concepts any citizen should know into a compact book: how the monetary system works, what inflation is and how it affects us, how interest rates are formed, what moves financial markets, and the role of central banks. Structured as an express economics course, readable in a few hours.
Marc Vidal writes for the citizen who feels that the economy affects them but does not understand it. In this compact book, published in 2019, he condenses the most important economic concepts — inflation, interest rates, fiscal policy, sovereign debt, economic cycles — into a deliberately light and accessible format. The proposition is ambitious in its simplicity: in a day of reading, the reader should be able to follow an economic news bulletin without getting lost. Vidal largely achieves this through a direct style and a skill for translating technical terms into everyday images. The inevitable weakness of the format is superficiality: no concept can be developed with the depth it deserves in a book of this kind. For readers who already have basic economic training, the text will feel too introductory. For those starting from scratch, it is a valid entry point that should serve as a springboard to deeper reading. It is not an investment book; it is an economic literacy book.
For readers without economic training who want to acquire a basic vocabulary and understanding of how the economy works; too introductory for those who already have knowledge.
FactThe book was published in 2019, a year in which Spanish GDP grew by 2% according to the INE, following several years of sustained recovery from the 2008 crisis.
