Our review

Published in 2020, "Independízate de Papá Estado" (loosely: Break Free from the State) is the most practical and direct Spanish-language reference for anyone looking to build a low-cost index fund portfolio within the Spanish and European context. Antonio Rico has spent years managing portfolios and educating investors through his blog Balio, and that practical track record shows: the book is not an adaptation of Anglo-Saxon discourse but a specific analysis of options available in the Spanish market, the tax implications of mutual funds versus ETFs for Spanish residents, and the common traps individual investors fall into. The central thesis is simple but powerful: relying on the state for retirement is a flawed strategy, and any middle-income citizen can build sufficient wealth by combining systematic saving, global index funds, and time. The book makes no promises about returns or sophisticated strategies; it offers applied common sense. Its limits are those of the genre: some tax and product sections may become outdated as regulations change, so supplementing it with current sources is advisable. For readers who have already worked through Bogle or Collins in English, this book provides the local context those authors cannot.

Key takeaways

• In Spain, indexed mutual funds carry tax advantages over ETFs for individual long-term investors.
• Systematic saving sustained over time matters more than any sophistication in asset selection.
• Relying exclusively on a state pension is a financial risk worth managing proactively.
• The perceived complexity of index funds exceeds the real complexity; the main barrier is emotional, not technical.
