Published in 1927, the clearest and most direct exposition of classical liberal principles: private property as the foundation of all freedom, peace as a prerequisite for prosperity, representative democracy and the rule of law as the only political systems compatible with economic progress. Written for the general public.
«Liberalism: In the Classical Tradition» by Ludwig von Mises, published in 1927, is the most systematic and direct manifesto of classical liberalism written in the twentieth century. Unlike Mises's technical works on economic theory, this book was conceived for an educated non-specialist reader and sets out with unusual clarity the philosophical, political, and economic foundations of the liberal program: private property as the condition of all freedom, peace as the prerequisite of prosperity, the free market as the only mechanism capable of coordinating economic activity without coercion. Mises writes with a conviction that borders on militancy, which is simultaneously his greatest strength — no argument is left undeveloped — and his most obvious weakness: the book does not engage with its critics but dismisses them, with a confidence in a priori deductive reasoning that many modern economists consider insufficient. Historical context matters: Mises writes in the Weimar Republic, in the face of advancing socialism and fascism, and that urgency colors every page. Read today, it is an indispensable classic for understanding Austrian School thought and European classical liberalism, though it demands readers willing to confront its premises against the historical evidence that followed.
For readers who want to encounter the philosophical foundations of classical liberalism in their most systematic form; less suited for those expecting empirical analysis or a pluralist survey.
Fact«Liberalismus» was first published in German in 1927; its first English translation under the title «The Free and Prosperous Commonwealth» did not appear until 1962.
