"Dr. Doom" Nouriel Roubini, who predicted the 2008 crisis, identifies ten megathreats that will shape the global economic future: unsustainable debt, easy money policies, deglobalization, demographic ageing, inequality, climate change, pandemics, US-China tech war, de-dollarization, and the rise of autocracies.
Nouriel Roubini earned the nickname "Dr. Doom" by predicting the 2008 financial crisis years in advance, and in this 2022 book he applies that same pessimistic lens on a far larger scale. His argument is that the world does not face a single risk but ten converging mega-threats: unsustainable debt, the liquidity trap, deflation followed by stagflation, currency crises, asset bubbles, multipolar geopolitics, artificial intelligence and structural unemployment, deglobalization, recurring pandemics, and climate crisis. The book's strength is synthesis: Roubini connects macroeconomics, geopolitics, and technology with ease within a coherent framework. Its weakness is the same tone that made him famous — systematic pessimism can obscure time horizons and actual probabilities. Not all threats are equally imminent or equally severe, and the book does not always calibrate those differences precisely. Even so, as an inventory of global structural risks, it is a useful reference for wealth managers, macroeconomic analysts, and any reader who wants to move beyond "markets always go up" thinking.
For long-horizon investors who want to understand the global macroeconomic risk map; not advisable as a sole reference given its systematically pessimistic tilt.
FactRoubini presented a scenario of mortgage collapse and banking crisis to the IMF in 2006 that was met with skepticism; the events of 2008 validated that analysis.
