Our review

Poor Charlie's Almanack is not a book in the conventional sense — it is a curated collection of speeches, interviews, and reflections by Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett's partner at Berkshire Hathaway, compiled by Peter Kaufman with Munger's direct collaboration. The revised 2023 edition updates and expands the original 2005 version. What makes the book unique is its focus on mental models: Munger argues that effective thinking requires a "mental latticework" built from the fundamental concepts of multiple disciplines — psychology, biology, physics, history, economics — applied in combination to analyze any problem. That multidisciplinary approach is not decorative: Munger practiced it over decades of investment analysis and decision-making, and the book documents how that framework applies in reality. The text includes his famous speeches on the causes of human failure, the cognitive biases that affect all investors, and the psychology of poor decision-making. The volume is large, deliberately so: Munger valued depth over easy synthesis. Readers looking for an executive summary will miss precisely what makes the book valuable.

Key takeaways

• Munger's mental model lattice proposes using the fundamental concepts of multiple disciplines in combination — not as analogies but as genuine analytical tools.
• The psychology of human error — the cognitive biases Munger catalogs with precision — affects all investors, including the most experienced.
• Disciplined patience — acting rarely and thinking deeply — was one of the pillars of Munger's success across decades.
• Investing in exceptional businesses at fair prices outperforms investing in mediocre businesses at cheap prices: quality compounds.
