Our review

Andrew Grove led Intel through the hardest transition in its history: abandoning the memory business the company had invented, to concentrate on microprocessors. From that experience he draws the concept that gives the book its meaning, the «strategic inflection point»: the moment when one of an industry's fundamental factors — a technology, a regulation, a competitor, a shift in customer habits — changes such that the strategy that worked stops working, and no amount of additional execution saves it. Grove describes with clinical precision what happens inside an organisation at that moment: the data begin to contradict internal doctrine, the middle managers in contact with the market perceive it before leadership does, and leadership spends its energy explaining why the signals are noise. His recommendation — cultivate deliberate paranoia, question the business's assumptions before the market does — is easier to state than to practise, and Grove admits it. A short book, written by an executive who lived the process, not a consultant who observed it.

Key takeaways

• A strategic inflection point invalidates the prior strategy: executing it better does not help.
• Middle managers detect the signal before leadership, which typically explains it away as noise.
• Intel abandoned the memory business it had invented: the lesson carries cost, not rhetoric.
• The «paranoia» Grove proposes is an organisational habit, not a personality trait.
