Our review

"The Soul of Money" operates in a register entirely different from most personal finance titles. Lynne Twist does not discuss savings rates, portfolios, or financial instruments: she discusses the psychological and spiritual relationship with money, and how the scarcity narratives that Western society has internalized produce anxiety, greed, and counterproductive decisions. Twist arrived at these conclusions after decades working in humanitarian organizations and development projects in some of the planet's most impoverished regions, which gives her a genuinely unusual vantage point. The central argument is that a mindset of sufficiency — recognizing there is enough when one stops spending energy on narratives of lack — frees capacity to make better decisions about money. This is a book closer to philosophy and personal development than to technical financial education. Its limits are those of its genre: the ideas are powerful but do not translate directly into concrete financial actions. For readers who have spent years trapped in an anxious relationship with money, it may be the book that opens a different conversation.

Key takeaways

• The scarcity mindset — the belief that there is never enough — is a cultural narrative, not an objective description of economic reality.
• Aligning financial decisions with one's own values produces greater well-being than maximizing returns in the abstract.
• Money is a neutral resource; the meaning we assign to it determines how we use it and how it affects us.
• Genuine generosity — not generosity performed out of guilt or image — has documented effects on subjective well-being.
