Our review

Gregorio Hernández Jiménez — a long-standing Spanish individual investor and founder of the Invertirenbolsa.info forum — builds a systematic, encyclopaedic guide to financial independence specifically calibrated for the Spanish context. What sets this book apart from Anglo-American FIRE literature is precisely that calibration: the tax framework discussed is Spain's IRPF income tax, the investment vehicles are those available to Spanish residents, and the legal references apply to Spanish territory. Hernández covers the path to financial independence from its foundations — what it truly means not to depend on a salary — to its more technical dimensions: dividend tax optimization, the trade-off between direct stock accounts and investment funds, and planning both the accumulation phase and the subsequent income phase. The tone is didactic and patient, written for a reader starting from scratch or with scattered intermediate knowledge. The encyclopaedic scope is simultaneously the book's greatest asset and its main limitation: depth on any individual topic is sometimes thin, and specialist readers may find certain treatments superficial. As an overview of the path to financial independence within the Spanish system, however, it is hard to find a more complete work in Spanish.

Key takeaways

• Financial independence is the point at which capital income covers basic expenses; the exact figure depends on the withdrawal rate each individual considers sustainable.
• In Spain, the choice between investment funds (with tax-free switching) and direct shares paying dividends carries tax implications worth modeling in advance.
• The accumulation phase and the drawdown phase require distinct strategies — a single plan rarely covers both adequately.
• The Spanish tax and regulatory context differs enough from the Anglo-Saxon one that American FIRE books cannot be applied directly without significant adaptation.

Fact

Gregorio Hernández founded the Invertirenbolsa.info forum in the early 2000s, which grew into one of the most active Spanish-language investing communities on the internet.
