Our review

Playing with FIRE is a rare entry in personal finance literature: not a technique manual but a lived account from the inside. Scott Rieckens, a filmmaker with no prior financial education, recounts how a documentary about the FIRE movement led him to question the compulsive spending propping up an empty lifestyle in Coronado, California. What sets the book apart from other FIRE texts is its emotional honesty: his wife Taylor's fear of uncertainty, the couple's arguments over priorities, the social friction of opting out of consumer expectations. Rieckens is not an expert; he is a witness, and that gives the book a credibility that technical guides often lack. The savings rates he describes are ambitious even in the US context, and the 4% withdrawal rule underpinning FIRE deserves scrutiny the book does not fully provide. The cultural frame is American — tax treatment, retirement accounts, and housing markets differ sharply from most of Europe. Even so, the core thesis — that cutting spending below a threshold accelerates the path to financial independence exponentially — is universally applicable. A brisk, emotionally engaging read that works better as a conversation starter about values than as an investment guide.

Key takeaways

• Financial independence is achieved not by earning more but by interrogating every expenditure before committing to it.
• The 4% withdrawal rule is the structural backbone of FIRE, but its validity rests on historical market assumptions worth studying independently.
• The transition to aggressive saving carries real social and relational costs — costs the book addresses with unusual candor for the genre.
• Above all, the book makes the case for defining precisely what life you want to live and then building your finances around that answer.

Fact

The book accompanies the documentary of the same name directed by Rieckens himself, released in 2019.
