Daniel Pink argues that everyone sells — even non-salespeople spend 40% of their time moving others to act. The book updates sales and persuasion science for the era of inverted information asymmetry (where buyers know as much as sellers), providing techniques based on behavioral psychology: attunement, buoyancy, and clarity.
Daniel Pink opens with a premise that unsettles: we are all in sales. It does not matter whether the business card says «engineer», «doctor», or «teacher» — in every conversation where we try to move someone to think or act differently, we are selling. His research, based on a survey of 7,000 workers and social psychology studies, estimates that 40% of any professional's working time is spent on this «non-sales selling». The thesis he builds from there is that the classic rules of selling have changed radically: in the age of information symmetry, the «buyer» already knows as much as the seller, so effective persuasion no longer rests on pressure or information asymmetry, but on attunement, buoyancy, and clarity. Pink updates the classic ABC of selling (Always Be Closing) with a new one: Attunement, Buoyancy, Clarity. The book reads quickly and is packed with studies and experiments that illustrate each point. A fair critique: at times it falls into the airport-bestseller format — interesting data presented without sufficient critical depth — and its conclusions are more useful for professionals in corporate environments than for salespeople in high-pressure or complex negotiation contexts.
Very useful for professionals, managers, teachers, and communicators who need to persuade without a formal sales function; less deep than it promises for experienced salespeople or negotiators.
Fact«To Sell Is Human» was published in December 2012 and simultaneously reached number one on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller lists.
