Our review

Before Isaacson's monumental biography there was this one, and in several ways it remains the better book. Ashlee Vance wrote about Elon Musk in 2015, when Tesla and SpaceX were still contested bets rather than today's giants, and that temporal distance works in the book's favour: it captures the character in his heroic decade, without the later political noise. Vance documents the harsh South African childhood, the first successes with Zip2 and PayPal, and the decision — incomprehensible to all of Silicon Valley — to bet the $180 million from the PayPal sale on the two businesses most likely to fail imaginable: rockets and electric cars. The chapters on 2008, with SpaceX one failed launch from extinction and Tesla financing itself with days of margin, are among the best ever written on the edge of extreme entrepreneurship. The portrait is balanced: superhuman vision and work capacity coexist with brutal treatment of employees and a flexible relationship with deadlines and facts. Anyone wanting to understand why Musk inspires devotion and rejection in equal measure will find the origin of both here.

Key takeaways

• Musk reinvested his entire PayPal fortune into SpaceX and Tesla, running out of personal liquidity in 2008: total commitment as strategy.
• Musk's «algorithm» appears here in embryo: question every requirement, delete parts and processes, and only then optimize and accelerate.
• SpaceX's vertical integration — building in-house what the industry bought — cut launch costs by an order of magnitude.
• Musk's impossible deadlines work as a management tool: they are almost always missed, but they compress what the industry believed possible.

Fact

Vance secured over forty hours of interviews with Musk, who initially tried to control the book and then cooperated without veto rights; the Spanish edition was published by Península in 2016.
